An 11th Century mott and bailey castle, the only Royalist stronghold in the north of England. After a 3 year siege a surrender was negotiated in December 1645 between Oliver Cromwell and the Royalists. A fascinating trip for all ages showing the workings of a medieval castle. Good gift shop and café.
